Karijini National Park (E)

This park is the best we've seen here in Australia, I mean for us it really was! Fortunately it rained a few days ago and that made the contrast of the red earth and stone compared with the lush newly green even bigger. What's more there are many gorges to escape the heat with natural pools to swim in  -  absolutely fantastic!

We didn't start as early in Exmouth as we wanted what resulted in being late later on. Anyway, we decided to make a sidetrip to the Cape Range gorges where one of the Grand Canyons from Australia lies. It was great and we could imagine how great the gand canyon in America would be. This little sidetrip delayed our arrival in Tom Price, our destiny for the day, and we arrived in the dark at the campground. As you probably can imagine it is not at all relaxing to drive in the dark and be afraid of kangaroos bouncing into the lights of the car...

The very next morning we headed straight for the Karijini NP. First we visited the visitor information center where we got a good impression of the local flora and also about the history of the park and its traditional owners. The woman at the desk directed us to the campground and said we should hurry because it'll be almost full. That's the reason why we went straight to the campground and were surprised to find it almost empty...

As soon as we set up camp Katja and Chris turned up. We met this Swiss couple on our snorchelling tour and realised that we had the same plans for the next couple of days. Together we went to hike in the Dales Gorge. It was said to be a difficult hike but it was really good and well maintained. At the end we had a swim in the lovely Circular pool until Felix made out many little black worms...leeches. They didn't suck blood but we all got immediately out of the water and went back to the carpark and the campground where we spent th night chatting about our travelling experiences.

The next day we went in Chris and Katjas car to the famous Weano Recreation Area. The road was gravel and several creeks crossed it which we would have never managed with our rear-wheel driven van.

Not only the view over many gorges was spectacular but the swim in the pools in the gorges as well. Thatfor we had to climb into the gorges. As usual we set out in our hiking boots but only after 5 minutes walk we had to get rid of them: the first pool was already there water covering the path. There were hikers coming out of the gorge and disappeard fully in the murky water. We changed into thongs and Teva and moved on. The last part of the gorge was narrow and ended on a rope where we had to let us down to the pool. A huge pool for just the four of us...but not for long and we would have had to share it with a group of teenies. Luckily we were already on our way out of the gorge.

After having such a good time together we had to say goodbye to Katja and Chris. They headed northwards to Port Headland whereas we drove back to Tom Price. Not a town we wanted to stay very long but it would have been too far to drive straight on to Carnarvron on the coast. After driving back all the way we came we spent another day in Kalbarri and stayed in Geraldton for one night. Today we head inland into the Outback before we arrive on our final destination in a weeks time: Perth.
