Walls of Jerusalem (E)

The Walls of Jerusalem, a two day hike, was kind of a training for the longer and harder Saouth Coast track. But mainly we did it because of the stunning scenery and landscape.

Many parts of Tasmania are Nationalparks and World Heritage Sites. One of these parks is the Craddle Mountain - Lake St Claire Nationalpark where the famous Overland Track is, which Fabi and Mieke hiked before. Further inland are the Walls of Jerusalem situated where hiking for days without seeing many other tourists is possible.

A narrow trail leads up the hill from the carpark to awonderful plateau on which we hiked most of the time. butt the steep part was haed to climb, not because of its steepness, no, because of the heat. But once on the plateau it was worth the effort. The scenery was stunning and marvelous as was the diversity of plants and wildlife. We saw two black snakes, many wallabies and heard strange birds.

For the night we made camp at Dixons Kingdom, a small and really old hut, surrounded by pencil pines 1000 years old. Instead of carring lightweight hiker tents we put up a stupidly heavy and big tent in which all of us could sleep and was much fun. If it had rained we could have easily cooked and eaten in it without getting wet.

For the sun setting  we went up Mt Jerusalem after dinner, an hour walk to the top. The colours cast by the setting sun were incredible as was the view gained at tht top. We drunk to it with a bottle of wine we carried up.

The next morning we were surprised as we realised that we forgot the oats for our breakfast. Fortunately we still got some risotto rice left and instead of oats we cooked creamed rice with white chocolate. Mmh... After that we had so much energy thet we we went up two little peaks, Solomons Throne and Temple Mountain.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't the same and it began to rain but that didn't really matter. In comparison to the day before there were many people and all wanted to sleep in Dixons Kingdom hut that night. Might have been a bit crowded...
